PAPUA - The Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) continues to play a pivotal role in supporting the acceleration of welfare development in Papua, under the Presidential Instruction No. 9 of 2020. This directive mandates the TNI to ensure security, assist regional governments in delivering essential services, and foster inclusive social communication with all stakeholders in Papua.
With this mandate, TNI has deployed specialized Military Task Forces to Papua, focusing on creating a stable and secure environment as a foundation for development. A peaceful and conducive security situation is critical for enabling the participation of all stakeholders and residents in advancing the region. However, ongoing threats and disturbances from the Free Papua Movement Organization (OPM) remain a significant obstacle to these efforts.
Addressing Security Challenges
The OPM’s actions, including intimidation, violence, and even heinous crimes such as murder, rape, and attacks on civilians and security forces, have severely hindered development initiatives. Notable incidents include the tragic murder of New Zealand helicopter pilot Glen Malcolm Conning on Monday (5/8/2024), a crime that drew international attention. TNI responded swiftly, securing the Alama region and evacuating victims, including health workers, teachers, and infants, showcasing their unwavering commitment to humanitarian action.
Additionally, the successful rescue of Susi Air Pilot Captain Phillip Mark Mehrtens on Saturday (21/9/2024) highlighted TNI's dedication to restoring peace in Papua. This operation, conducted in collaboration with local stakeholders, reaffirmed TNI’s resolve to achieve a safe and harmonious environment for all.
TNI’s Vision for Papua
Commander of the HABEMA Media Task Forces, Colonel Yogi Nugroho, emphasized TNI's relentless efforts to ensure Papua’s safety and stability. “Our mission is to protect Papua from any security disturbances posed by the OPM. Through these actions, TNI and Polri Security Forces actively support the government’s program to accelerate welfare development in the region, ” stated Colonel Yogi in his official press release.
Through its commitment to peace, security, and inclusive development, TNI aims to turn challenges into opportunities, paving the way for a brighter and more prosperous future for Papua.
